When moving couches by hand or by machine, it’s important to know how much they weigh. By knowing the weight, you can decide which way is best to move the couch. Weight will vary quite a bit depending on the size and material of the couch.
Most couches weigh between 54 pounds to 240 pounds. A loveseat, or 2 seater couch, can weigh as low as 54 pounds. A sectional can weigh as much as 240 pounds, and a standard couch, or 3 seater couch, is in between at a max weight of 145 pounds.
There are many different types of couches made in different ways with different materials. Therefore, the weight of one couch can be very different from the weight of another couch. If you want to find out what your couch may weigh, continue reading down below.
Figuring Out How Much A Couch Weighs

Since there are three main types of couches, there are three different sets of data to discuss along with an average of the three main sets of data. Within these three sets of data, there is:
- minimum and maximum couch weight
- average couch weight
- median couch weight
- weight of each individual couch

What Can Affect A Couch’s Weight?
Many things can alter the weight of a couch, including:
- Reclining Seats: This could cause an increase in weight due to the extra mechanics to make the reclining possible
- Extra Armrests in Between Seats: More space is needed in between seating, creating more couch support. This adds to the weight.
- Special Compartments: Extra space, latches, or cup holders often add heavy materials.
- Thin Cushions: Less cushion could cause a slight decrease in weight.
- Close-To-Ground Seating: This could cause a decrease in weight.
- Couch Bed or Pullout: Pull out couches are notorious for being incredibly heavy, as they store a metal foldable frame and a mattress inside.
- Bench-Style Design: This would make the couch much thinner and possibly shorter, making it lighter.
How to Safely Move a Couch
After you find out the weight of your couch, it is important to figure out the best way to move it. This protects both the couch and yourself. Picking up heavy furniture incorrectly can severely harm you, so it is important to take precautions.
For the lighter couches, like loveseats or lighter standard couches, you should at least have one other person carrying the couch with you. It’s important to have one person on each side so there isn’t any lack of support on one side.
Below are a few things you should do when moving to protect you and the couch when moving it.
- Wrap the cushions and couch with blankets or protective material like foam.
- Like mentioned before, get help from friends or a hired hand when moving it.
- Make sure you know the best way to get the couch from point A to point B with your and your crew’s safety in mind along with the couch. If necessary, map out checkpoints where you can set the couch down and relax for a moment.
- Be careful if moving the couch up or down stairs. Be aware of your surroundings and use boards as a makeshift ramp if necessary.
- Be careful when lifting to prevent straining of any muscles or tendons.
- Lift with your legs, not your back.
