The Titanker waterproof shower curtain liner has the OEKO TEX 100 Standard certification and is a 100% polyester shower curtain which is machine washable and PVC-free.

The fabric is waterproof making it a great plastic liner alternative. It’s available in several sizes and colors so it can adapt to your bathroom needs.

This liner has buttonholes instead of metal grommets which could either be a pro or a con depending on your personal preferences.

Although it is advertised as being waterproof, some users reported that direct water spray can get through the liner.

N&Y HOME Fabric Shower Curtain and Liner

This is a product that can be both the shower curtain and liner. It’s also the only curtain on our list that holds the Global Recycled Standard certification.

This certification means that this liner is made with at least 50% recycled materials and conforms to environmental and chemical requirements which makes it one of the best eco-friendly shower curtains.

Some users of this curtain complained that the waterproofing on this curtain wore out and became less waterproof after a few washes.

Many users also stated that the curtains shrank when they were washed. This is true but Bean Products states how much their fabric will shrink so you can take it into account when purchasing your size.

AmazerBath Shower Curtain Liner

The AmazerBath shower curtain liner has the OEKO TEX 100 Standard certification. It is made out of peva plastic and is PVC-free.

It’s extremely inexpensive making it a great vinyl liner if you just need something quick and cheap. It also comes in several sizes to match the size of your shower.

Although it’s a good inexpensive options, many users reported that it’s too lightweight without enough magnets so it can blow around the shower.

If you point the showerhead directly at the liner, some water could get through, but unless you do it on purpose, this is unlikely to happen.

downluxe Waterproof Fabric Shower Curtain Liner

This shower liner has the OEKO TEX 100 Standard Certification. This product is made of polyester and polyester liners are PEVA and PVC-free.

It comes in a variety of sizes but there are only three color options. Fabric shower curtain liners are machine washable making it easy to clean and keep mold away.

Since the liner is breathable, it dries quickly when it gets wet which better helps it to prevent mold and mildew.

This liner only has stitched buttonholes and no metal grommets which could be a benefit depending on your personal preference.

However, this shower liner is not totally waterproof so if you point the shower head directly at the liner the water could get through onto your floor.

NTBAY EVA Clear Shower Curtain Liner

This liner has the OEKO TEX 100 Standard Certification meaning it’s been tested to make sure it doesn’t contain over 1,000 chemicals that are harmful to human health.

The NTBAY EVA shower curtain liner is plastic which makes it completely waterproof. It’s also a PVC-free shower curtain liner and the shower curtain hooks are included.

It comes in several different styles with different patterns within the plastic. Some of the patterns make the liner opaque but it may be best to pair this liner with a shower curtain for extra privacy.

Although it comes in different styles, there is only one size available.

AmazerBath Waffle Shower Curtain

As with most of our shower curtains, this one has the OEKO TEX 100 Standard Certification. It has rust resistant metal grommets to keep it usable for a long time.

This curtain comes in several sizes and different colors but the style is in a waffle pattern. It’s made out of heavy duty fabric which will prevent it from blowing in the shower.

Because this curtain is fabric, it is not completely waterproof so the company recommends pairing it with a shower liner for the best results.

Some users reported that the fabric could pill if it was exposed to too much friction.

Popkozzi White Fabric Shower Curtain

This polyester linen shower curtain has the OEKO TEX 100 Standard Certification making it PVC and PEVA free.

It comes in four different sizes and comes in a variety of patterns which are nicer than just a standard block of color shower curtain.

Since it’s made of fabric, this curtain works best with a liner to prevent too much water from getting through. It’s also machine washable on the delicates setting in cold water.

However, some people reported that the colors of the curtain they recieved did not completely match the colors on the listing photos.

Why Non-Toxic Shower Curtains and Liners Are Important

Wanting a nontoxic shower curtain is all fine and good but why is it important?

Most old plastic shower curtains are made out of polyvinyl chloride also known as PVC. PVC is a very common material that doesn’t normally cause issues and is not dangerous.

However, the danger from PVC comes when it is heated. When it’s heated, it can off-gas dangerous and volatile chemicals that can cause numerous health effects.

Here’s a report from the EPA about the effects polyvinyl chloride exposure can have on humans.

You wouldn’t think this is a big deal because it’s not like you’re cooking your shower curtain on the stove. But, the heat and steam from a hot shower can cause some of these harmful substances to get released.

It’s not as bad as breathing in factory fumes, but it can still increase the chances of health issues if there is continued exposure.

So, when you’re shopping for a shower curtain or shower curtain liner, make sure it’s PVC-free.

A popular alternative to PVC shower curtains is PEVA which is polyethylene vinyl acetate. It is used as an alternative to PVC because it contains no chlorine.

Chlorine is the main compound in PVC that causes issues. PEVA shower curtains and liners are considered safe and do not cause any health issues to humans.

But, if you want to be extra careful, you can always get a fabric liner to eliminate all possibilities of chemicals in your home.

How to Prevent Mold and Mildew

One of the biggest complaints people had about their shower liners when I was reading reviews was that they would grow mold quickly.

Here are some easy things you can do to prevent mold from growing on your shower curtain, liner, and bathroom.

1. Increase Airflow

The magic recipe for mold and mildew growth is hot and humid conditions for a long at least 24 hours. A steamy bathroom checks all the boxes.

To prevent the mold from having the perfect conditions, all you need to do is increase the airflow and have good ventilation in your bathroom.

Open a window, turn on the fan, or both. This will help get the excess moisture out of the air and dry your bathroom out quickly.

2. Close the Shower Curtain

This one is also quick and easy. Once you’re done with your shower, pull your curtain out of the tub and leave the liner inside the tub so they’re separated enough to dry easily.

Then, close your shower curtain so that it’s spread out as far as it can go.

This will decrease the amount of time it takes your liner and curtain to dry which will decrease the chance mold has to grow on it.

3. Use a Dehumidifier

Increasing air flow and airing out your bathroom will be enough in most cases, but, if you live in a humid climate, that’s not going to cut it.

If you live somewhere that has high humidity for part of or all of the year, investing in a good dehumidifier is a great way to decrease the moisture in your bathroom.

4. Spray With Vinegar

Vinegar is a natural antibacterial agentand according to MoldTech, vinegar can kill 82% of mold spores.

So, spritzing your curtain and liner with vinegar can help kill the mold and mildew before it even has a chance to start.

You can use both white vinegar and apple cider vinegar for this and for an extra kick you can add a mild dish soap to the mix such as dawn.

A great recipe I’ve found for a mold and mildew killer is from Evereday Cheapskate, they say to add a cup of dishsoap to a spray bottle and fill the rest with vinegar, then shake it and you’re ready to use it.

Focus particularly on the bottom of the liner since that will have the most moisture and is where mold and mildew will grow first.

Once you’ve sprayed it down, spread out your curtain as described above and let it air dry.

5. Wash Regularly

One of the best ways to prevent mold growth is to regularly wash your shower curtain and liner. Most shower curtains and liners will say if they are machine washable or not.

If they are, throw them in your washing machine with your normal detergent and use the delicates cycle and cold water. Then hang them back up in the shower to dry.

If you’re not sure if it’s machine washable, you can wash them by hand. You’ll need a big sink or tub, fill it with hot water and add some detergent. Then take a spoon or stick and agitate the water.

Once you’ve thoroughly spun the water, dump out the dirty water and refill it with hot water and rinse the curtain and liner until no more soap remains.

Then, hang them back up in the shower to dry.
